T.G.I.F. with @GabyRosMakeup
How long have you been in the beauty business? I’ve been doing makeup since I was 8 years old but I never thought I could do it professionally so I went to dental school! I graduated and practiced until 3 years ago, when I decide to follow my passion and do what I love - it was the best decision I've ever made! Thanks to my husband that pushed me to do it and has supported me every day, in everything I do - he's my angel.
Where are you from, and where do you currently reside? I'm from the beautiful country of Venezuela. Venezuela is having a really difficult time right now and every night I send all my prayers to my people there and hope for a better future. I live in Miami now and must say I love it so much, the city and the people are amazing here! It’s such a perfect place to live.
When did you first fall in love with makeup? When I was a little girl, I used to play with my mom's makeup; I’d touch the shadows, feel the brushes, and I was really drawn to it. When I grew up, I always looked in the magazines for inspiration and tried to recreated those looks on my friends and family. I've always loved to do makeup on others, more so than on myself, I still feel that way!
What is a day in your life like? I live and breathe makeup so from the moment I wake up, I'm thinking about looks for clients or classes. First thing I do is check my phone, answer inquires, book classes, and get updates on my upcoming brush line - which consumes a big part of my day, but makes me so happy.
I always make sure dedicate time for my skincare and beauty routine. While my mornings are similar, my days as a whole vary depending on the day; I do makeup classes for beginners (self makeup classes) and professionals (with models) during the week, and typically Saturdays are for my clients and brides. Nights are the part of the day I share with my husband and between 2:00 am and 4:00 am is my most creative time so almost all of my ideas are from this time frame. I'm a night person!
What is your daily beauty regime? I'm a crazy face cleaning girl! I wake up and clean my skin deeply then moisturize and use some lovely oils (argan, coconut, jojoba and vitamin C) I don't wear makeup everyday but I feel naked if I go out with nothing on my face - it’s just weird lol.
What are your essential beauty products? That's a difficult one, but I’m always using primer, concealer, powder, mascara, brow pencil, lipstick and contour, lol! I can't wear makeup without contour and highlight.. is just impossible!
What inspires you to do what you do? My students and clients! Every time I see their smiles, when they see themselves in the mirror, is just the best feeling ever!!! Especially in my self-executed makeup classes, my girls feels so much satisfaction knowing they do all that beautiful makeup by themselves, that is a great thing to witness. I just love what I do so so much. I feel blessed.
If you could advise our readers of any one thing, what would it be? Do what you love! Always, no matter what, and you will be happy. When you do what you love, you don't work... you just live! Things won't be easy but it will be worth it.
How did you hear about Aesthetica Cosmetics? In the Dressyourface master class in Miami, I had the chance to try the powder contour kit and I was blown away by incredible quality of the formulas. I've been using all the Aesthetica contour products non-stop from that day and I won't change it for any other. Also my students use this products and I recommended daily on my social media.
How often do you contour? If I wear makeup I contour, I just can go out without contouring my cheeks and nose. It just doesn't feel right lol, some people don't like it but I think makeup is so powerful that you just have to use it right to look the best you can for yourself.
What is your advice to those that are new to contouring? Don't over do it, start soft and then you can always add more, but sometimes less is more! I recommend using powders if you're a beginner - it's the easiest way. Also respect your face shape and place the shadows depending on your features, everyone is different.
What has been the most memorable moment of your career, thus far? I feel extremely blessed that what I do allows me to learn from amazing artist like Samer Khouzami and Tamanna Roashan, travel to a lot of cities doing my classes in the United States and Latin America. But one of my most memorable moments was last year when I was able to do the first big makeup event in my country: The Venezuela Makeup Show. The show brought really talented people together to inspire and teach others, I'm very proud of that moment.
Right now I'm in a very good time of my career because I'm about to release my second collection of brushes! This will be a unique luxury brush line that I'm so proud to make, it's a dream come true. I designed every brush for a specific function and product placement, every shape, bristle and size are custom made. I thought this was impossible but when you work hard and with determination the only result is success!
What are you looking forward to most for the coming year? Honestly I want to teach! I want to travel to different cities and teach every girl or boy how to do their makeup, step-by-step, being supervised by me in every moment. I think this is the way makeup should be taught! This is what I've been doing for the past 3 years and is what I'm expecting to do for many years to come, in all the places I can possible go, small towns, big cities everywhere!
Where can you be found if you’re not working? Well I work every day because that's what I like (I’m workaholic for sure) but if I take a day off I'll probably be on the beach with my husband, we absolutely love the beach.
What beauty secret can you share with the readers? Always use sunscreen and moisturizer! It make all the difference in the world, just take care of your skin! That’s the best secret for a flawless face and makeup application.
If you could work on any celebrity face, whose would it be and why? Oh, I have a long list just because I love to work with different skin shades and features, but my tops are: Emilia Clarke, Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson, Olivia Wilde, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, and of course I'll be lying if I don't mention Kim Kardashian. I love her and her sisters, and I’d ove to do her makeup even once in my life, her features are perfect.
What fashion designer or fashion house best represents your personal style? I've always admired Carolina Herrera, she’s also Venezuelan and she's just pure elegance. Currently I think Michael Costello represents my personal style, I've been a fan since project runway and I love him, some day soon I'll be wearing all his fantastic clothes.
Who’s on your playlist when you’re working? Oh, I play top hits on Spotify. I like to hear a variety from Sia to The Weekend and Rhianna mixing it up is always better.
Who is your beauty influence or icon? In the beauty world and social media, I really admire a lot of people especially Anastasia Beverly Hills for such an amazing brand and empire, and a lot of makeup artists and youtubers like Desi Perkins, Tamanna Roashan, Nikkietutorials, Jaclyn Hill, Jefree Star, and of course Amrezy (I absolutely love her) they work really hard to get where they are - role models for sure.
Do you have a favorite beauty and/or spa treatment? I love massages and pampering myself. For the face I love how my skin feels after a deep facial cleaning and peeling. So soft and glowing.
What do you do to get your face event-ready? I exfoliate my skin the previous day (never the same day) use all my skin care products and avoid using too much makeup the days before, most important thing I drink a lot of water! This is key for a good skin.
Do you have any pets? Yes I have a beautiful cat name Laquita. She's like a daughter to me!
